Modern Paver Patios That Stay Level

Updated October 2026

A modern paver patio adds measurable, appraiser-recognized value to a home. The national data backs it: outdoor living projects consistently return more per dollar than most interior upgrades. But a patio is only as good as what's underneath it. Pavers that shift, sink, or gap within two years weren't installed wrong at the surface. They were set on a sub-base that was never prepared correctly. At InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC, we're STC Certified installers with 10 years of paver work across the Phoenix Valley, and we hold a 4.9-star rating across 27 Google reviews. Call us before any other crew sets foot on your yard.

Cost on a paver patio project is driven by square footage, the paver material you choose (concrete pavers, travertine, and flagstone each carry different price points), the amount of demolition and haul-off required, and the slope correction needed for proper drainage. A small courtyard install and a full backyard entertainment surface aren't the same job, so the range is wide, and that's honest. We don't publish a number that doesn't match what we'd actually quote you, because every yard is different. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Separates a 20-Year Patio from a 3-Year Repair Bill

It comes down to sub-base depth, compaction, and drainage slope, none of which are visible once the pavers are set.

The paver itself is almost never what fails. What fails is the 4-to-6-inch compacted aggregate base underneath it. In our desert climate, caliche soil underneath that base doesn't compact or drain the same way a sandy loam does farther north. When monsoon water saturates it and the heat bakes it back out, an improperly prepared bed heaves. We excavate to the right depth for the load the surface will carry, compact in lifts with a plate compactor, set a consistent slope (typically 1/8 inch per foot) toward a defined drainage path, and then lay a geotextile fabric layer before the bedding sand goes down. None of this is glamorous. All of it is the difference between a patio that looks the same in 2035 as it does on install day and one that needs a re-level before you've owned it three years. Our paver installation and repair service covers the full scope from demolition through final sealing.

Materials

Paver Options and Why the Choice Matters

Concrete Pavers

High compressive strength, consistent sizing for tight joints, and the widest color and texture range. The reliable choice for driveways, high-traffic walkways, and large patio fields.

Travertine

Natural stone with thermal mass properties that keep surface temps lower than concrete. A premium option for pool surrounds and outdoor dining areas where barefoot comfort matters.

Flagstone

Irregular-cut natural stone that reads as organic and architectural at the same time. Pairs well with desert plant palettes and gives each project a distinct, non-production look.

Permeable Pavers

Designed with gaps or a porous concrete mix that lets stormwater pass through into the sub-base rather than sheet-flowing across your property. A practical option where HOA or municipal drainage rules are a factor.

Our Process

How a Paver Patio Project Runs

Three phases, no ambiguity about what happens when.

  1. 01

    Consultation and Design

We walk the site with you, take measurements, review your HOA guidelines if applicable, and work through material and pattern options that fit your space and how you want to use it. You get a detailed scope before anything moves.

  2. 02

    Demolition and Sub-Base Work

Existing concrete, gravel, or sod comes out first. Our demolition services are part of the same job, no second crew, no scheduling gap. Sub-base excavation, compaction, and drainage preparation happen in this phase, which is where the quality of the finished surface is actually determined.

  3. 03

    Installation and Cleanup

Pavers go down on screeded bedding sand, cut to fit at every edge, locked with edge restraint, and finished with polymeric jointing sand swept and compacted into every joint. We clean the site before we leave. See what a finished project looks like in our project gallery.

What Homeowners Ask Us Most

Do paver patios actually add resale value to a home?
Yes, and the mechanism is straightforward: an outdoor living surface extends the functional square footage of a home in a way that appraisers and buyers both recognize. In the Phoenix Valley market, where indoor-outdoor living is the dominant lifestyle driver, a well-built paver patio is one of the highest-ROI exterior improvements a homeowner can make. The caveat is installation quality. A patio that's already settling or showing gaps reads as a liability, not an asset.
How do you keep weeds from growing between pavers?
We use polymeric jointing sand, which binds when wet and cures into a semi-rigid compound in the joints. It's far more resistant to weed intrusion and ant displacement than conventional dry sand. We also install a geotextile fabric layer below the bedding sand during sub-base prep. Neither is a permanent guarantee against every weed, seeds blow in from above and can germinate in debris that accumulates over time, but the combination dramatically reduces the maintenance burden compared to an improperly finished install.
What type of paver material holds up best in extreme desert heat?
Travertine has the best surface temperature performance because its natural porosity dissipates heat rather than retaining it. Concrete pavers in lighter colors are a close second, surface color matters more than most people expect. Dark concrete pavers in direct summer sun can reach surface temperatures that are uncomfortable underfoot. We factor this into our material recommendations based on the orientation of your space and how much shade coverage you'll have.
How deep does the sub-base need to be for a residential patio?
For pedestrian-load patio surfaces, the compacted aggregate base should be a minimum of 4 inches, ideally 6 inches in areas with expansive or caliche-heavy native soil like much of the Phoenix Valley. Vehicular surfaces, driveways or areas where trucks will park, need 8 inches or more. Getting this depth wrong is the single most common cause of paver failure we see when we're called in to re-do another contractor's work.
Can a paver patio be combined with artificial turf in the same yard?
Yes, and it's one of the most popular configurations we install across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Scottsdale. A paver field for dining and seating transitions directly into a synthetic turf lawn area, giving you a hard surface where furniture sits and a soft, green surface for the rest of the yard. The two materials meet at a border course of pavers or a concrete mow edge, depending on the design. We handle both scopes as a single project. See our artificial turf installation page for specifics on the turf side.

How do I know if my yard needs drainage corrections before pavers are installed?
If water pools near your foundation, flows toward the house during monsoon storms, or your existing surface stays damp for more than a day after heavy rain, drainage correction needs to happen before the sub-base goes in. We assess this during the site consultation. Skipping it and setting pavers over a drainage problem doesn't fix the problem, it just covers it up until the water finds another way to tell you it's there.
