Hardscaping That Works in Desert Conditions

Updated October 2026

Hardscaping is every permanent, non-living element in your yard, the pavers underfoot, the retaining wall holding a slope in place, the stone borders defining a planting bed, the concrete block separating your yard from a neighbor's. It's the structural skeleton that makes everything else function. We install it across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and the wider Phoenix Valley with the same crew from site prep through final clean-up, and we back the work with a 4.9-star rating across 27 verified Google reviews. If your yard needs structural work done properly, call (623) 263-2652 and let's look at what you're working with.

Good hardscaping in a desert climate has to account for things a contractor in Ohio never thinks about. Caliche soil underneath a slab doesn't drain the way topsoil does. Get that wrong and you're looking at cracked pavers or a shifted wall after the first heavy monsoon. Extreme summer heat expands concrete and stone at different rates, so the materials, the joint compounds, and the base depths all matter more here than they would in a mild climate. Our scope covers paver installation and repair, retaining walls, rock and stone work, travertine and turf combinations, and site prep and grading to ensure everything sits on a stable, properly pitched base. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Hardscape Projects We Install

From a single paver path to a full outdoor room. This is the scope we handle start to finish.

01

Paver Installation and Repair

Concrete, travertine, and natural stone pavers for driveways, patios, walkways, and pool decks. We cut, set, and compact to a proper base depth, no hollow-sounding units, no lippage between stones that catches a foot in the dark.

02

Retaining Walls

Block and stone retaining walls that manage slope, prevent erosion, and add definition. We design for the load the wall will carry, not just for how it photographs. A decorative wall that fails after a monsoon is not a decorative wall.

03

Rock and Stone Work

Decorative boulder placement, stone edging, and accent rock work that ties a desert yard together without looking like a gravel parking lot. Material selection, size, and placement all affect the final read of the space.

04

Travertine and Turf Combinations

One of the more requested installs in the Valley: travertine set among artificial turf panels for a clean, high-end look that eliminates water use without eliminating visual warmth. We build these as integrated systems, not two separate projects patched together.

05

Concrete Block Walls

Privacy walls, property-line structures, and decorative block work. Block walls in Arizona need proper footings below the caliche layer and the right mortar mix for extreme heat cycles. We know how deep to go before the wall goes up.

06

Outdoor Living Structures

BBQ islands, fire pit surrounds, and pergola footings that integrate with a hardscape plan. These are the add-ons that turn a paver patio into a space that actually gets used.

How We Work

From Site Assessment to Final Clean-Up

  1. 01

    Site Assessment and Plan

We walk the yard, probe the soil, and look at drainage before we price anything. The grade, the caliche depth, and the access points all affect what goes in and what it costs to do it right.

  2. 02

    Demo, Prep, and Base Work

Old concrete, overgrown rock beds, and unstable soil come out first. We handle site prep and demolition in-house. The base layer, compacted aggregate at the correct depth, is what determines whether pavers stay level five years from now.

  3. 03

    Installation and Clean-Up

One crew, start to finish. No subcontractors showing up mid-project with different standards. We set, cut, compact, and seal, then we handle the clean-up before we leave. You shouldn't have to touch anything after we're gone.

Why It Matters Here

Desert Climate Factors That Affect Every Install

These are the conditions an Arizona hardscape has to survive. Ignoring any one of them shows up later.

  1. 01

    Caliche Soil Layers

Caliche is a calcium carbonate hardpan that blocks drainage and resists excavation. We break through it and install proper base material so water moves out of the system instead of pooling under your pavers.

  2. 02

    Monsoon Drainage

A flat patio in a yard with no pitch plan will flood every July and August. We grade every project with positive drainage built in, water moves away from the house and out of the installed area.

  3. 03

    Thermal Expansion

Summer temperatures above 115°F cause concrete and stone to expand significantly. Proper joint width, the right polymeric sand, and correctly sized units prevent the cracking and heaving that shows up on cheaper installs by late summer.

  4. 04

    HOA Compliance

Most HOAs in Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa have written standards for front-yard hardscape coverage ratios, acceptable materials, and color restrictions. We've worked in enough of these communities to know what gets approved on the first submission.

Hardscaping FAQs

What is hardscaping and how is it different from landscaping?
Hardscaping refers to the permanent, structural, non-plant elements of a yard: pavers, retaining walls, concrete, stone edging, block walls, and built structures like BBQ islands. Landscaping covers everything that grows. In a desert yard, the two work together, hardscape provides the framework, and drought-tolerant plants or artificial turf fill the spaces between.
How deep does a paver base need to be in Arizona's caliche soil?
It depends on the application. A pedestrian patio typically needs 4 to 6 inches of compacted base aggregate above the prepared sub-grade. Driveways carrying vehicle weight need 6 to 8 inches or more. The critical variable in Arizona is the caliche layer. If it's not broken through and properly backfilled, you'll get drainage failure and eventual shifting regardless of how good the pavers themselves are.
Do I need HOA approval before installing pavers or a retaining wall?
Almost certainly yes if you're in a planned community in Chandler, Gilbert, or Mesa. Most HOAs require a submitted plot plan showing the coverage area, material spec, and color selection before any front-yard hardscape work begins. We've navigated this process across the Valley. Get your HOA guidelines before the project starts, changes after installation are expensive.
How do I keep pavers from shifting after installation?
Proper edge restraints, the correct depth of compacted base, and polymeric sand in the joints. Those three things together are what hold a paver field stable long-term. Miss any one of them and the units migrate over time. We also cut clean borders rather than leaving gaps at the perimeter, because unsupported edges are the most common starting point for movement.
Can a retaining wall be added to an existing yard without tearing everything out?
Sometimes, but it depends on what's already in place and what the wall needs to hold back. A low decorative wall, say, 18 to 24 inches, is often addable with minimal disruption. A structural wall holding significant grade change requires proper footing work and possibly permits. We assess the existing grade and soil conditions before we commit to scope. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.
What's the best paver material for an Arizona pool deck?
Travertine is the most practical choice for pool surrounds in the Arizona climate. It stays significantly cooler underfoot than concrete or standard pavers at peak summer temperatures, it doesn't absorb water, and it holds its surface texture when wet. Concrete pavers are a serviceable option and cost less, but barefoot comfort in July is a real consideration that travertine handles better. See our travertine and turf paver page for installed examples.
