Grading and Resloping That Redirects Water

Updated October 2026

Water pooling against a foundation is not a minor cosmetic issue. It is a structural risk, and in the Phoenix Valley's monsoon season, it happens fast. Grading and resloping corrects the pitch of your yard's surface so that runoff moves away from the house, away from paver edges, and toward appropriate drainage points rather than sitting where it can do damage. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC brings 10-plus years of desert site prep experience to every grading job, along with STC Certified Installer credentials and a 4.9-star rating across 27 Google reviews. If your yard holds water after a storm, the slope is wrong. Call (623) 263-2652 to have it assessed.

Grading and resloping work begins with reading the existing terrain: where water currently travels, where caliche layers are forcing it to the surface, and what the finished grade needs to be to achieve optimal pitch away from all structures. A minor resloping on a flat residential lot is a different scope than correcting significant negative grade on a sloped lot with retaining structures already in place. Cost drivers include lot size, the volume of soil to move or import, access constraints, and whether site prep requires removing existing hardscape before grading can begin. We do not quote grading work over the phone without seeing the site, because every yard's baseline is different. Every job is different -- contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

Why Yard Slope Fails in Desert Climates

Caliche, compaction, and monsoon rain create drainage problems that flat-looking yards hide until the water arrives.

Most homeowners don't think about yard pitch until the first monsoon. Then the water has nowhere to go. Desert soils compact differently than turf-country soils: the caliche hardpan common throughout the Phoenix Valley is nearly impermeable, which means surface runoff has to travel somewhere, and without a correctly engineered grade, that somewhere is your foundation, your block walls, or your neighbor's property. We see the same pattern repeatedly -- yards that look flat from the street but slope slightly inward toward the house. That negative grade might only be a quarter-inch per foot, but over a 20-foot run that's five inches of hydrostatic pressure building against a stem wall during every storm. Retaining walls and drainage solutions can address part of the problem, but if the grade itself is wrong, those features are managing a symptom rather than fixing the cause.

Our Process

How We Approach a Grading & Resloping Project

  1. 01

    Site Assessment

We walk the full perimeter and identify existing drainage paths, low points, foundation exposure, and any hardscape that affects water movement. No two lots read the same -- we document before we disturb anything.

  2. 02

    Grading & Soil Work

We cut and fill to achieve the correct slope, typically a minimum of two percent grade away from all structures. Where soil volume is insufficient, we bring material in. Where excess is present, we remove it. The goal is a consistent, engineered pitch across the entire yard.

  3. 03

    Surface Prep & Handoff

Once grade is confirmed, the site is compacted and ready for the next phase -- whether that's artificial grass installation, paver installation, or rock and stone work. We don't leave a job half-finished. The crew cleans up before we call it done.

What's Included

What a Professional Resloping Job Covers

  1. 01

    Grade Evaluation

We measure existing pitch across the full yard, identify negative grade zones, and determine the minimum correction needed for proper foundation protection.

  2. 02

    Soil Cut, Fill, and Import

Existing soil is redistributed to achieve target grade. When the site needs additional fill to reach the correct elevation, we bring it in -- no shortcuts with substandard material.

  3. 03

    Compaction

Loose fill settles unevenly. We compact graded soil to the density required for the finished surface above it, whether that's pavers, turf base, or decorative rock.

  4. 04

    Integration with Existing Features

Grade work has to account for existing walls, pool decks, gates, and utility access points. We grade around these features so the finished surface pitch is consistent, not just average.

When Grading Is the Right Call

grading & resloping work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
Not every drainage complaint requires resloping. A clogged drain, an improperly pitched paver patio, or a blocked swale can each cause standing water without the overall yard grade being wrong. We'll tell you honestly which problem you actually have. If the grade is the issue, resloping is the fix. If it's a localized paver pitch or a drainage line problem, we'll say so -- because sending a crew to move soil when a drain cleaning solves the problem is not a good use of your money or ours. Grading is typically the right call when water consistently pools in the same locations after every storm, when a foundation inspection has flagged hydrostatic pressure, or when a yard is being prepared for a full hardscaping or artificial turf installation that requires a true base.

Grading Questions, Answered Directly

How much does it cost to have a yard regraded?
Cost depends on lot size, volume of soil to move or import, site access, and whether existing hardscape needs to come out first. A small residential resloping on an accessible lot is a different project than correcting severe negative grade on a large lot with block walls already in place. We don't publish ranges because a number that covers one job can be wildly misleading for another. Every job is different -- contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.
What is the correct slope for yard drainage away from a house?
The standard is a minimum two-percent grade -- roughly one inch of drop for every four feet of horizontal run -- directed away from all foundation walls and structures. In practice, we aim for consistent pitch across the full yard rather than just the immediate perimeter, because water will find any flat zone and pool there. Desert caliche soils make achieving consistent compaction at that pitch more demanding than in standard turf-country soil conditions.
Does grading disturb existing landscaping or hardscape?
It depends on the scope of the grade correction needed. Minor resloping on a bare or rock-covered yard can often work around existing features. Significant grade corrections typically require removing and reinstalling pavers, relocating plants, or adjusting block wall footings. We assess this during the site walkthrough and give you a clear scope before any work starts. Nothing comes out that doesn't need to come out.
Can grading be done at the same time as artificial turf or paver installation?
Yes, and it's often the most efficient approach. Grading and resloping is a standard phase of our site prep process before any surface installation. When the two are scheduled together, we achieve the correct grade and compact the base in one continuous sequence, rather than mobilizing twice. If you're planning a turf or paver project, ask us to evaluate the existing grade at the same time.
Is there a best time of year to regrade a yard in the desert Southwest?
Spring and early summer are the most practical windows in the Phoenix Valley -- before monsoon season arrives in July and August. Grading during the dry season gives the soil time to settle and compact without rain undermining the finished grade before the surface installation goes down. That said, we've done corrective grading in every season. If you're dealing with active water intrusion, waiting for the ideal season is the wrong call.
How do I know if my yard needs resloping versus a drainage system?
If water pools in multiple locations across the yard after every storm, grade is usually the root issue. If water pools at one specific low point that used to drain fine, a blocked or undersized drainage line is more likely. We won't sell you a resloping project if a drain fix is the right answer -- that's the kind of call that costs us the job in the short term but earns the referral in the long term. A site assessment tells you which it is.
