Paver Installation and Repair That Holds

Updated October 2026

Paver installation and paver repair require more than dropping stone on sand. Base depth, compaction, edge restraint, and joint sand selection all determine whether your patio or walkway looks the same in five years or starts rocking loose after the first monsoon season. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC has spent over 10 years setting pavers across the Phoenix Valley, holds STC Certified Installer credentials, and carries a 4.9-star average across 27 Google reviews. Call (623) 263-2652 to schedule your free quote.

The scope of a paver project drives cost more than almost anything else. A basic walkway runs far less than a full paver patio with a seat wall and integrated lighting. Material choice matters too: standard concrete pavers, travertine, and flagstone all land at different price points with different heat-retention profiles. Arizona caliche soil often requires deeper excavation than homeowners expect, and skipping that step is the single most common reason paver surfaces fail within a few years. Every job is different. Contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Separates a Solid Paver Job from a Failing One Solid

Most paver failures trace back to what you can't see: the base.

01

Proper Excavation Depth

Arizona caliche is dense, drainage-resistant, and unforgiving. We excavate to the depth the job actually needs, not the minimum that looks adequate on day one.

02

Compacted Aggregate Base

A crushed rock base compacted in lifts gives pavers somewhere solid to sit. Skip this step and the surface will shift, crack, and heave within a few seasons.

03

Edge Restraint Installation

No edge restraint means the outer rows migrate outward over time. We set it on every project, staked properly so the whole field stays locked.

04

Polymeric Joint Sand

Polymeric sand hardens when wet and resists ant intrusion, weed seed germination, and washout during monsoon rains. Regular sand does none of those things.

05

Pattern and Grade Planning

Drainage slope is engineered before a single paver goes down. Water needs somewhere to go, and that direction shouldn't be toward your foundation.

06

Final Compaction and Sealing

We run a plate compactor over the finished surface to set the pavers into the bedding layer, then seal on request to lock color and simplify long-term upkeep.

Our Process

How a Paver Project Actually Gets Done

Three phases. No subcontractors. One crew from demo through cleanup.

  1. 01

    Site Assessment and Demo

We assess the existing surface, mark utilities, and handle demolition of old concrete, turf, or rock. The ground gets cleared and graded before anything new goes in.

  2. 02

    Base Prep and Layout

Excavation to correct depth, aggregate base installed and compacted in lifts, edge restraints set, bedding sand screeded to grade. Pattern and slope confirmed before pavers touch the ground.

  3. 03

    Installation, Sand, and Cleanup

Pavers set by hand to pattern, cuts made on site, polymeric sand swept and activated, final plate compaction run. Full cleanup before we leave. You'd barely know we were there except for the finished surface.

Paver Repair

Existing Pavers Sinking, Cracking, or Coming Loose Sinking

edge restraint installation work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
Repair is not the same job as new installation, and plenty of contractors won't touch it. We do. Sunken sections almost always mean base failure, not just a surface problem. Pulling the affected pavers, excavating and recompacting the base, then resetting is the only fix that actually holds. Relying on adding sand under a sunken paver without addressing the base gives you another sunken paver inside a year. We'll tell you honestly if a section is repairable or if replacement is the better call. Cracked travertine can often be replaced piecemeal if the pattern is still available. Loose or rocking pavers in a mortared application are a different diagnosis than a sand-set installation. If you're not sure what you've got, call and describe it. We've seen most of what the desert does to hardscape over 10 years. You can also see finished repair and installation work in our project gallery.

Paver Materials We Work With

  1. 01

    Concrete Pavers

Most affordable. Wide pattern and color range. Hold up well in desert heat if installed over a proper base. Good choice for driveways and high-traffic areas.

  2. 02

    Travertine

Natural stone. Cooler underfoot than concrete in direct sun, which matters in Arizona summers. Popular for pool decks and patios. See our travertine installation page for specifics on that material.

  3. 03

    Flagstone and Slate

Natural, irregular cuts that fit desert landscaping aesthetics well. Pairs cleanly with desert landscaping and custom landscape design projects.

Paver Installation and Repair: Common Questions

How deep does the base need to be for a paver patio in Arizona?
For residential patio applications, a compacted aggregate base of 4 to 6 inches is standard. Driveway applications typically require 6 to 8 inches because of vehicle load. Arizona caliche can complicate excavation, sometimes requiring additional depth or mechanical breaking. Cutting corners on base depth is the leading cause of paver failure in this region.
Can sunken pavers be repaired without replacing the whole patio?
In most cases, yes. Sunken sections are usually isolated to areas where the base failed, and we can pull those pavers, recompact and re-grade the base, and reset the stones. If the original pavers aren't cracked, they go back in. The key is fixing the base, not just topping off sand. A topoff repair rarely lasts more than one monsoon season.
What is polymeric sand and why does it matter in the desert?
Polymeric sand contains a binder that activates when wet, locking the sand in joints and hardening as it dries. In the Phoenix Valley, this matters for two reasons: monsoon rains wash out regular joint sand quickly, and ants readily excavate regular sand from joints, causing surface instability. Polymeric sand resists both. It's not optional on any job we install.
How do paver driveways handle Arizona's heat compared to concrete?
Individual pavers expand and contract independently, so they're less prone to cracking from thermal movement than a continuous concrete slab. If a section does crack or shift, individual pavers can be replaced without breaking up the whole driveway. Concrete repair often looks like a patch. A paver replacement is essentially invisible if the material still matches. See our driveway paving page for more on this application.
Do pavers require sealing after installation?
Sealing is optional, not required. It enhances color, makes the surface easier to clean, and adds a layer of protection against staining. In Arizona's UV environment, unsealed pavers will fade somewhat over time. If you're using travertine near a pool, sealing is worth considering to reduce absorption of pool chemicals. We can apply sealer as part of the installation or as a separate service.
How long does a typical paver installation take?
A standard residential patio runs one to three days depending on size, demolition needed, and material. Larger projects with walls, steps, or complex patterns take longer. We give a realistic timeline at quote time and stick to it. If a project ran over without a clear reason, that's a red flag about how the crew works.
