Concrete Block Walls Built to Spec

Updated October 2026

Concrete and block walls are structural work, and structural work done wrong shows up fast, especially in desert soil where caliche hardpan, monsoon saturation cycles, and extreme thermal expansion put every footing to the test. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC has been building retaining walls, privacy walls, and decorative block structures across the Phoenix Valley for over 10 years, and our approach starts at the ground: proper footing depth, correct block selection for the application, and drainage detailing that keeps the wall from failing behind the face where you can't see it. We're an STC Certified Installer, licensed in AZ, and carry a 4.9-star rating across 27 Google reviews. Call us to talk through your project before you pour a single yard of concrete.

Block wall scope varies more than most homeowners expect. A short garden border and a six-foot retaining wall on a sloped lot are structurally different jobs, different block grades, different footing requirements, different drainage provisions behind the wall face. Cost drivers include wall height, linear footage, soil condition (caliche requires mechanical breaking before any footing goes in), block type, and whether the project connects to adjacent paver installation and hardscape work. Decorative painted finishes, cap block selection, and integration with existing site prep and grading also affect the final scope. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Separates a Solid Wall from One That Shifts

The failure point on most block walls isn't the block. It's everything behind and beneath it.

Most block walls that fail within five years were poured on undersized footings or backfilled without drainage aggregate behind the wall face. In the Phoenix Valley, monsoon season delivers heavy, sudden water loads that have nowhere to go when the backfill is compacted soil. Hydrostatic pressure builds. Walls bow, crack, or tilt. We don't cut corners on the drainage detail because we've seen what happens when someone else does. Every retaining wall we build gets a compacted footing at the correct depth for soil load, gravel backfill behind the face, and weep holes or drainage pipe where the application calls for it. That's not premium service. That's minimum acceptable work on any structural block installation.

Block Wall Types

Applications We Build Across the Phoenix Valley

One crew handles the full range, retaining, privacy, decorative, and combination applications.

01

Retaining Walls

Grade changes and sloped lots require engineered retention to prevent soil movement. We build CMU retaining walls with proper batter, compacted footings, and drainage provisions suited to desert soil conditions.

02

Privacy Walls

Six-foot block privacy walls are standard in desert neighborhoods and HOA communities across Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa. We match existing block coursing, texture, and cap style so the new wall reads as part of the original structure.

03

Decorative Block Screens

Breeze block and decorative CMU patterns add visual interest to patios and outdoor living spaces without sacrificing airflow, a practical choice in a climate where solid walls trap heat against the house.

04

Garden and Planter Walls

Low-profile block planters and garden borders define desert landscape zones, separate rock and stone work from turf areas, and hold soil in raised planting beds without shifting over time.

05

Combination Projects

Block walls frequently anchor larger landscape projects alongside travertine and paver installations, artificial turf borders, or graded drainage swales. We coordinate scope start to finish so the wall and the surrounding hardscape work as one system.

How We Work

From Footing to Finished Cap Block

  1. 01

    Site Assessment and Layout

We assess soil type, grade change, drainage flow direction, and neighboring structures before any layout stakes go in. Caliche layers get located early, they dictate footing strategy and demo scope.

  2. 02

    Footing, Block, and Drainage

Footing depth and width are sized for the wall height and soil load. Gravel backfill and drainage pipe go in behind the face on retaining applications before any block is laid. No shortcuts on the parts you won't see after the job is done.

  3. 03

    Cap, Finish, and Cleanup

Cap block is set with consistent joint spacing and sealed where the application requires it. We clean the site completely before we leave, mortar residue, broken block, and excavation material are hauled away. See our full cleanup process.

Desert Soil Conditions That Affect Every Block Wall Job

retaining walls work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
Caliche is the defining challenge in Phoenix Valley block wall construction. It's a calcium carbonate hardpan layer that sits anywhere from a few inches to several feet below grade, and you can't hand-dig through it. We break caliche mechanically before footing excavation, which adds time and cost to projects where it's present, but skipping that step means a footing poured on uncompacted material that cracks in the first monsoon season. Expansive clay soils, where they occur, create different problems: they swell with moisture and exert lateral pressure on wall faces. Our grading and resloping work frequently runs alongside block wall projects to redirect drainage away from wall footings in the first place. The goal is a wall that doesn't move for decades, not one that looks good in the first year.

Common Questions About Block Wall Installation

How deep does a concrete block wall footing need to be in the Phoenix Valley?
Footing depth depends on wall height, soil bearing capacity, and whether caliche is present. A standard six-foot privacy wall typically needs a footing at least 18 inches deep in stable soil, deeper if we're going through caliche or working in expansive clay. Shallow footings are the most common reason block walls tilt or shift within a few years of installation. We assess the soil before we spec the footing.
What type of block is used for retaining walls versus privacy walls?
Retaining walls typically use heavier CMU block, 8-inch or wider, with rebar and grout fill in the cells for structural strength. Privacy walls are often built with standard 6-inch CMU when soil loads aren't a factor. Decorative applications use specialty block grades, including split-face and slump block, which are common in Arizona residential neighborhoods. The block spec drives material cost significantly.
Do concrete block walls need drainage behind them?
Retaining walls always need drainage behind the face. Without it, monsoon rains saturate the backfill, hydrostatic pressure builds against the wall, and the structure moves or cracks. We use clean gravel backfill and perforated drain pipe in retaining applications. Privacy walls on flat lots with no soil retention function don't require the same drainage detail, but the footing still needs to be set on stable, compacted material.
Can a concrete block wall be painted or textured to match my existing home exterior?
Concrete masonry takes paint and texture well. Elastomeric paint is the standard exterior finish for CMU in the desert, it seals the block surface against moisture while flexing through thermal cycles without peeling. Stucco applied over block is another option that integrates the wall visually with a stucco home exterior. Cap block selection also affects the finished look, and we'll walk you through options before the job starts.
How long does a block wall installation typically take?
A straightforward privacy wall section, say, 30 to 50 linear feet with no grade complications, is typically a two to three day project including footing cure time. Retaining walls with significant height, caliche excavation, or complex drainage detailing take longer. We don't rush curing times on footings or mortar joints to hit an arbitrary deadline. The wall needs to set correctly before load goes on it.
Does InfinityTurf handle block wall projects that connect to paver or turf installations?
That's actually the most common configuration we work with. Block walls frequently define the boundary of a paver patio, border an artificial turf zone, or retain grade ahead of a complete yard transformation. Running both scopes with the same crew eliminates the coordination problems that come from hiring a wall contractor and a landscaper separately, different schedules, different site access, and gaps in responsibility when the two scopes meet.
What drives the cost difference between a basic block wall and a retaining wall on a sloped lot?
Height, soil conditions, and drainage requirements are the three biggest cost drivers. A retaining wall on a sloped lot requires mechanical excavation through caliche, engineered footing depth, rebar and grout fill in the block cells, and gravel drainage aggregate behind the face. A flat-lot privacy wall is a simpler structural job. Site access, block type selection, and whether the project connects to adjacent hardscape work also affect the final scope.
