Backyard Landscaping That Fits the Desert

Updated October 2026

Backyard landscaping in the desert isn't the same job it is anywhere else. Caliche soil, triple-digit summers, HOA approval requirements, and water restrictions turn a simple yard project into a problem most general contractors don't know how to solve. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC does. With over 10 years of desert installs, a 4.9-star rating across 27 Google reviews, and STC Certified Installer credentials, we've built backyards across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and the surrounding valley that hold up, look sharp, and don't rack up water bills. Call (623) 263-2652 to get a free quote on your yard.

Every custom landscaping job we take on starts with site evaluation, not a sales pitch. We look at your soil, your drainage, your sun exposure, and what your HOA requires before we recommend anything. From there the scope might include artificial turf installation, paver work, desert plantings, gravel, drainage corrections, or some combination of all of them. What drives cost is scope and square footage, not arbitrary markups. A small backyard refresh runs differently than a full demolition and rebuild. We don't subcontract, so there's no third crew showing up you've never met. Every job is different. Contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What a Custom Backyard Project Actually Covers

Most landscaping mistakes happen because the homeowner didn't know what to ask for. Here's what a real full-scope backyard job includes.

01

Site Prep and Demolition

Old grass, dead plants, cracked concrete, and compacted caliche don't get landscaped over. They get removed. Our crew handles demolition and site prep before a single new material touches the ground. That's the part most bargain contractors skip, and it's why their work fails in year two.

02

Artificial Turf

Synthetic grass is the most practical upgrade for a desert backyard. No irrigation, no mowing, HOA-compliant in most communities, and it stays green through August. We carry pet-friendly turf options with proper drainage built in.

03

Pavers and Hardscape

Travertine, concrete, and natural stone pavers hold up in desert heat without cracking the way standard concrete does. Hardscaping ties together turf sections, patio areas, and walkways into a single finished design instead of a patchwork of separate installs.

04

Desert Landscaping and Rock Work

Drought-tolerant plants, decorative gravel, boulders, and decomposed granite are not afterthoughts. Chosen right, they anchor the design, reduce bare-soil dust, and keep HOA inspectors off your back. Chosen wrong, they look like someone emptied a gravel bag and left.

05

Drainage Solutions

Monsoon season is real. A backyard that pools water destroys turf edges, undermines pavers, and turns grass into a swamp. We evaluate drainage as part of the design, not as an emergency fix after the first rain.

06

Outdoor Living Additions

A finished backyard often wants something to anchor it. BBQ islands, pergolas, and shade structures pair naturally with turf and paver installs. See our outdoor living options for what pairs well with a custom yard build.

How It Works

From First Call to Final Walkthrough

  1. 01

    Consultation and Design

We come out, look at the yard, and talk through what you want. We'll flag soil issues, drainage problems, and HOA constraints before we quote anything. You get a clear plan, not a generic estimate sheet.

  2. 02

    Installation

Our own crew does the work. Demolition, base prep, turf, pavers, plants, and rock all get handled in the right sequence. Skipping steps is how installs fail. We don't skip steps.

  3. 03

    Cleanup and Walkthrough

When we finish, the yard is ready. Debris is gone, materials are cleaned up, and we walk you through the finished install before we leave. See our installation and cleanup process for what to expect.

Why It Matters

Common Landscaping Mistakes in the Desert

These are the calls we get after another contractor finishes the job.

  1. 01

    Skipping proper base prep

Caliche is rock-hard and doesn't drain. Laying turf or pavers directly on unexcavated caliche means uneven surfaces and pooling within one monsoon season.

  2. 02

Using non-desert plants in sun-trap areas

Plants that look fine in a nursery can fry in west-facing exposures that hit 160 degrees surface temperature in July. Desert-specific selection isn't optional.

  3. 03

    Ignoring drainage before the install

Flat backyards with no grade correction flood. Water has to go somewhere. If the design doesn't account for it, it goes under your turf seams and paver joints.

  4. 04

Buying cheap turf for a pet yard

Low-end synthetic grass without proper drainage infrastructure turns into an odor problem within months. Pet-friendly turf is a specific product category, not just any roll of green plastic.

What Sets This Work Apart

artificial turf work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC is an STC Certified Installer, which means the turf we put in meets a tested installation standard. A certification doesn't guarantee work any company doesn't also have to do right, but it does mean there's an accountable standard behind what we tell you. We're licensed in Arizona and carry 10+ years of installs across the Phoenix Valley. That's not a resume line. It means we've seen what fails in this climate, and we've figured out what doesn't. The 27 reviews we've earned average 4.9 stars, and they come from real homeowners who called about a yard and got one.

Backyard Landscaping Questions

What kind of work does a full backyard landscaping project actually include?
A full backyard project typically covers site demolition, grade correction, drainage work, base prep, turf or paver installation, plant selection, rock and gravel placement, and final cleanup. The scope depends on what's already in the yard and what the homeowner wants to end up with. Some jobs are turf-only. Others are complete rebuilds from the soil up. We scope it after we see the yard.
How does caliche soil in Arizona affect a landscaping install?
Caliche is a calcium carbonate layer that sits anywhere from a few inches to several feet below the surface. It doesn't drain, doesn't compact properly, and will crack hardscape materials if it's not dealt with before installation. Serious installs require excavating down to it or through it, depending on the project. Skipping that step is the most common reason desert landscapes fail within a year or two.
Will artificial turf hold up in 115-degree Arizona summers?
Modern synthetic turf is manufactured for heat. The surface temperature will be hot in direct sun, same as any dark surface in summer, but the turf itself won't degrade or lose its structure. We use turf products rated for high-UV desert climates. The backing and infill selection matter. Cheap products from big-box stores don't hold up the same way installer-grade turf does.
What are the most common HOA landscape violations in the Phoenix Valley, and how do you avoid them?
Most HOA violations involve unapproved plant species, synthetic turf with the wrong blade color or texture, unpermitted structures, and rock or gravel that doesn't meet the community's color palette requirements. We've worked with HOA-governed communities across Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa long enough to know what review boards flag. We design with those requirements in mind and can work with your HOA documents before we start.
Do you handle the full project from demolition to cleanup, or does the homeowner need to coordinate multiple crews?
We handle it start to finish. Demolition, haul-off, base prep, drainage corrections, turf or paver installation, plant placement, and final cleanup are all handled by our own crew. No subcontractors. You call us once, and we deliver the finished yard. We don't hand off work halfway through and walk away.
Can backyard landscaping include a putting green or playground turf area?
Yes. Putting greens and playground turf installs are specialty applications we do regularly. They require different turf grades and base prep than a standard lawn install, but they're part of the same project when the scope calls for it. A backyard can include multiple turf types in different zones, separated by pavers or retaining walls as needed.
