Rock Installation That Holds in Desert Heat

Updated October 2026

Rock installation done wrong shows within one monsoon season, gravel migrates, boulders shift, and decomposed granite turns to mud channels against your foundation. We've seen it on hundreds of properties across the Phoenix Valley, and it's almost always a prep problem, not a material problem. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC is an STC Certified Installer with over 10 years placing decorative rock, landscape gravel, and feature boulders across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and the surrounding area. Our 27 Google reviews average 4.9 stars. Call us for a free quote before you commit to a material or a layout.

What drives cost on a rock and stone project is site condition, square footage, material selection, and whether the existing surface needs demolition first. A basic decomposed granite refresh on a prepared surface is straightforward. A full boulder feature installation with graded drainage channels and custom landscape design behind it is a different scope entirely. We handle both, site prep, grading, weed barrier, edging, material placement, and final cleanup, all in one crew. We don't subcontract any part of this work. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

What Rock Work We Install

From fine decomposed granite to multi-ton accent boulders, we place and grade the full range of desert stone materials.

01

Decomposed Granite

DG is the workhorse of Arizona desert landscaping. We grade the subbase, lay commercial-grade weed barrier, set your borders, and compact the DG to the depth your soil and traffic demand. Skipping the compaction step is what causes the soft spots homeowners complain about six months later.

02

Decorative Gravel & River Rock

One-inch to three-inch crushed rock and river rock work as ground cover, dry creek beds, and drainage channels. We match material size and color to your paver and travertine surfaces so the whole yard reads as a designed system rather than a collection of separate installs.

03

Feature Boulders

Accent boulders anchor a desert yard visually. Placement matters more than size, a single 400-pound boulder set at the right angle looks intentional; five boulders set randomly look like a rock pile. We plan placement before we move anything.

04

Edging & Border Work

Steel, aluminum, and concrete mow borders keep materials in place and define the transition between rock zones and artificial turf areas. Without a solid edge, gravel migrates onto turf and turf fibers migrate into gravel. It's a small line item that prevents a big problem.

05

Dry Creek Beds

A properly designed dry creek bed moves monsoon runoff away from foundations and landscaping without pipes or pumps. We grade the channel, size the rock to the flow volume your yard generates, and set it so it looks natural at rest and functions during a storm.

06

Weed Control Prep

We use commercial-grade non-woven weed fabric rated for Arizona UV exposure, not the thin rolled product from hardware stores that fails in two seasons. Pre-emergent application is available as part of the prep package on applicable installs.

How It Works

From Site Assessment to Final Cleanup

  1. 01

    Assessment and Material Selection

We walk the property, evaluate the existing surface, confirm drainage direction, and help you select the right material for your soil type, sun exposure, and HOA requirements. Some materials look great in a showroom and fail in caliche-heavy soil. We'll tell you which ones before you buy them.

  2. 02

    Site Prep and Grading

Old material gets removed if needed, our demolition crew handles that in the same visit. We grade the surface for positive drainage, install weed barrier, and set permanent edging before a single rock goes down. The prep takes longer than the placement. That's how it should be.

  3. 03

    Installation and Final Detail

Material goes down in lifts, not all at once. Boulder placement is planned before boulders are moved. We finish by blowing off adjacent surfaces, sweeping edging lines clean, and confirming the drainage reads correctly. You shouldn't be able to tell we were there except for the finished yard.

Why It Matters

Desert Soil Fails Rock Installs That Skip Prep

decorative gravel river rock work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
Caliche, the hardpan calcium carbonate layer sitting six to eighteen inches below the surface across most of the Phoenix Valley, doesn't absorb water. It sheds it. A rock install that doesn't account for this will drain toward your house, not away from it. We've been working in this soil for over a decade, and drainage grading is part of every rock install we do, not an optional add-on. HOA compliance is the other issue most homeowners don't know about until after install. Many valley HOAs specify approved rock colors, maximum boulder heights, and minimum ground cover percentages. We've worked with HOAs across Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa long enough to know what typically triggers a violation letter and what doesn't. We'll point out any potential conflicts before the job starts, not after you've written the check. For projects that combine rock work with concrete block walls or outdoor living spaces, we sequence the work so the rock install comes last, no point in finishing a gravel field before a block wall crew has driven across it.

Rock & Stone Work: Common Questions

How deep should decomposed granite be installed in Arizona?
Two to three inches is the standard for foot-traffic areas. High-traffic walkways and driveways need three to four inches, compacted in two lifts. Going thinner than two inches means you'll see weed barrier through the DG within a season, and the surface won't compact properly. Most of the installs we get called to fix were done at one inch to save material cost. It's not a savings. It's a redo.
What size gravel works best for a dry creek bed in the Phoenix Valley?
For a functional dry creek bed that moves monsoon water, you want a mix: three-inch to six-inch cobble in the channel center, tapering to one-inch to two-inch rock at the edges. Using uniform small gravel throughout gives you a decorative look at rest but the rock migrates badly under flow. The mix holds position because the larger stones interlock under water pressure.
Does rock installation require a permit in Chandler or Gilbert?
Standard decorative rock and gravel installs don't require a permit in most Phoenix Valley municipalities. Boulder placements over a certain weight or height, and any work that involves regrading drainage toward a neighboring property, can trigger review depending on the city. We'll flag anything on your specific project that looks like it needs a permit before we start work.
Can rock and turf be installed in the same yard without one damaging the other?
Yes, but the sequencing and edging matter. Turf should be installed first, then rock borders set against it with a steel or aluminum edging divider. Rock gravel migrating under turf infill is a real problem when edging is skipped or done with a soft landscape border. We install the edging system between materials as a standard part of both turf installs and rock work.
How much does landscape rock installation cost?
Cost depends on square footage, material type, whether the existing surface needs removal, site grading complexity, and how much edging and border work is involved. A simple decomposed granite refresh on a prepared surface costs less than a boulder feature install with dry creek bed drainage and full site demolition. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.
What's the difference between decomposed granite and crushed granite, and which should I use?
Decomposed granite is naturally weathered material with mixed particle sizes that compacts into a firm surface. It's what most Arizona yards use for main coverage areas. Crushed granite is mechanically crushed and has sharper edges, which means it locks together tighter and works better for walkable surfaces and driveways. For loose coverage around boulders and native plants, DG is easier to work with and looks more natural.
