Desert Shade Structures Built to Entertain

Updated October 2026

A desert shade structure isn't a luxury out here. June through September, an uncovered patio in the Phoenix Valley is an unusable patio. Homeowners in Chandler, Gilbert, and Mesa are building pergolas and covered outdoor kitchens because it's the only way to actually use the space they paid for. InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC designs and installs BBQ islands and pergola structures that hold up against triple-digit heat, monsoon winds, and the kind of sun exposure that destroys lesser materials inside two seasons. If you want a backyard worth being in, call us and we'll walk through your options.

Every outdoor kitchen and pergola build is different. A freestanding pergola over a patio runs a different scope than a fully covered BBQ island with countertop, built-in grill, and integrated paver patios underneath it. What drives cost is size, materials (aluminum vs. wood frame, concrete block vs. prefab), whether you're tying into an existing structure, and how much prep the site needs. We handle demolition and site prep before a single post goes in, and we clean up when we're done. One crew, start to finish. Every job is different, contact InfinityTurf Landscaping LLC for an accurate estimate.

Why Arizona Backyards Need This

Shade isn't optional when the concrete hits 160 degrees.

Most homeowners don't realize how fast an uncovered outdoor space becomes unusable in the Valley. The concrete slab bakes, the grill handle burns your hand, and nobody wants to stand out there past 9 AM from May through October. A well-placed pergola or covered BBQ structure changes that completely. It extends usable hours. It makes the yard feel like a room instead of a liability. And a built-in outdoor kitchen means you're not hauling a portable grill in and out every weekend hoping it doesn't melt. We've built these for families in Gilbert who wanted a weekend gathering spot and for homeowners in Chandler who wanted something that pairs with their existing travertine and turf layout. The design follows the space.

What We Build

Pergolas, BBQ Islands, and Covered Kitchens

These aren't prefab kits. Every structure is built for the specific yard.

01

Pergola Structures

Freestanding and attached pergolas in aluminum or wood framing. We size them to the yard, anchor them properly for monsoon wind loads, and finish them clean. No flimsy box-store kits.

02

BBQ Islands

Built-in grill setups with concrete block or steel-stud frames, tile or stone countertops, and cut-outs for your grill, side burner, or refrigerator. Built to last in direct sun.

03

Covered Outdoor Kitchens

Full covered structures combining a solid roof or shade sail system with an integrated cooking and prep area underneath. The full outdoor room, not just a grill on a slab.

04

Patio Shade Additions

Shade sails, ramadas, and pergola additions to existing patio slabs. If you've got the concrete and just need the cover, we can work with what's already there.

How It Works

From Consultation to Final Cleanup

  1. 01

    Site Walkthrough

We come out, look at the yard, talk through what you want, and tell you exactly what's realistic for the space and budget. No vague promises.

  2. 02

    Build Day

Our crew handles all framing, anchoring, countertop work, and any paver or turf integration. We don't subcontract the work out.

  3. 03

    Cleanup and Handoff

We haul out every scrap of material and leave the yard cleaner than we found it. You get the outdoor space, not a construction zone.

Pairs Naturally with Your Yard Transformation

patio shade additions work, professional service in Phoenix, AZ
Most of our outdoor kitchen and pergola jobs aren't standalone. They're the last piece of a full backyard build that includes artificial turf installation, paver work, or custom landscaping. If you're already pulling permits or redoing the yard, adding a covered BBQ structure at the same time saves you a second mobilization cost and keeps the design unified. We can build the whole thing or bolt the pergola onto a yard we didn't touch. Either way works. What we won't do is talk you into scope you don't need. If a shade sail does the job, that's what we'll tell you.

Common Questions About Pergolas and BBQ Installs

What materials hold up best for a pergola in extreme desert heat?
Aluminum is the honest answer for most Valley backyards. It doesn't warp, doesn't rot, and handles UV exposure without the annual sealing that wood requires. Solid wood looks better on install day but needs maintenance every one to two years or it degrades fast in sustained 110-degree heat. We'll tell you which makes sense for your budget and how much upkeep you're willing to do.
Do I need a permit to build a BBQ island or pergola in Arizona?
It depends on the structure size, whether it's attached to the home, and your city's specific codes. Maricopa County and its municipalities have different thresholds. Anything attaching to the roofline of the house almost certainly needs a permit. Freestanding structures under certain square footage often don't. We know the local requirements and will tell you upfront what your project triggers.
Can a pergola or shade structure hold up through monsoon season?
Yes, if it's anchored correctly. That's the part most DIY installs get wrong. In the Phoenix Valley, monsoon winds can hit 60-plus mph in a straight-line storm. Footings need to go deep enough and anchoring hardware needs to be rated for the load. We build these to stay put. A pergola that blows over in August wasn't built right.
What's typically included in a BBQ island build?
The frame (concrete block or steel stud), waterproof sheathing, your choice of countertop surface, cut-outs for the grill and any accessories, and finishing work on all exposed faces. We don't include the actual grill appliance unless you want us to source it. Most customers buy the grill separately and we build the island around it.
How does a pergola project integrate with existing pavers or artificial turf?
We plan the footings and post placement so they work with the surface material. If you've already got pavers down, we core through them cleanly at the post locations and set footings below. If turf is going in at the same time, we coordinate both installs so there's no overlap or damage. Our paver patio work and pergola builds are designed to coexist, not fight each other.
How long does a pergola or BBQ island installation typically take?
A straightforward freestanding pergola over an existing patio slab often wraps in one to two days. A full covered outdoor kitchen with concrete block framing, countertop, and integrated paver work runs longer, typically three to five days depending on scope and cure time. We'll give you a realistic timeline during the site walkthrough, not a number we have to backtrack later.
